Prayer in school
I just saw a post from a cousin on facebook showing a speech that a father of a Columbine victim had made to Congress. In that speech, this father said that the fix for all our problems was to return prayer to schools. I can't believe I am reading that. I was there when we had forced prayer in school. Our superintendent would force us to sit through bible reading and prayer every morning before classes began. I hated it then. I still hate it. I felt trapped. I was being forced to participate in this prayer session even though I did not want to. There has always been prayer in schools, just not organized prayer. Tell me if you can, that you have never shown up for class and been told we have a pop test over what you should have read. How hard did you pray? I prayed pretty hard. Organized prayer in schools is wrong. It is wrong because it is forced onto children that cannot escape. It is always Christian prayer and it is forced on all children. We had a Catholic girl in our class. The prayers being offered were fundamentalist Baptist. How do you think she felt? Suppose there are atheists in that school? Should they then be forced to participate in prayer? Everyone needs to remember that religion and spiritualism are very private matters and that freedom of religion also means freedom from religion.
